Corporate social responsibility efforts (Soup Kitchen; Scholarships; Collaboration with Jamaica Chamber of Commerce re Youth Leadership Training Program) ACHIEVEMENTS: Corporate/Vision: • UCC, with support from the Secretariat of the National Export Strategy, is establishing a Caribbean Knowledge City (CKC), the first of its kind in the region. This will embrace public/private partnership. • Constructing a high technology building to support improved operations and facilitate customer led student-centred orientation. • Building a network of Caribbean partners to facilitate and support UCC expansion. • Designing enhanced ICT network to expand distance education opportunities on a global scale. • Appointed a former Governor General of Jamaica as the UCCs first Chancellor. • Established UCC Foundation and Advisory Boards. Quality: • UCC is the first private tertiary institution in the region to have all of its eligible degree programs accredited. • Was granted Accreditation approval from national accreditation boards in two OECS islands. • All Florida International University Programs at UCC received accreditation by the University Council of Jamaica. • The University of London awarded the UCC “Official Registered Centre Status”. This prestigious award was given in 2005 for UCC’s commitment and support of delivering University of London Extended System study programs. Growth: • Launched UCC’s Bachelor of Science in Education: Primary and Secondary • Introduced new Graduate degree programs eg. UCC MBA with specialization in: *General Management *Disaster Management *Social Entrepreneurship • Established UCC Masters in Education • Was granted an exclusive license in 2009 by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) in Canada to offer its two prestigious flagships and internationally recognized graduate degree programs in Jamaica and the region. • Graduated several cohorts of students in the Business Administration and Public Administration graduate degree programs of the Commonwealth (Commonwealth Executive Masters programs). • Completed the fourth batch of Diploma in Law in Jamaica, offered in cooperation with the University of London. • Celebrating 15 years of partnership with Florida International University, FIU. • Initiated the construction of a US$5M and major state of the art, multi-complex facility at its main campus in Kingston. Expansion of the Worthington Avenue Campus is in full force with the construction underway of this new facility. Increased UCC’s Visibility & Market Presence in Jamaica & other CARICOM Countries: • UCC’s presence was successfully established in: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada. St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. • New degree programs successfully offered via a blended format to interested students across five OECS islands. Established a Sustainable Financial Base/Growth & Profitability: • Tuition revenue continues to increase—39% increase from 2005 to 2013. • Increased student enrollment from 4264 (‘10) to 4521 (’13). • Improved accounts receivables process. • A new and updated website for UCC was successfully launched. • For the academic year of 2010-2011, the University realized a significant and unprecedented increase in its enrollment of approximately 30%. • Realized an unprecedented Gross Profit Margin (GPM) of up to 62 %. Corporate Training: • The UCC Cooperate Education Management and Services Solutions (CEMSS) department was created out of the recognition for specialized training seminars and programs targeting Corporate Jamaica. • The CEMSS developed and introduced a total of thirty five (35) new executive type programs to offer to the business community. Strengthened Relation ships with Stakeholders: • The UCC was nominated for a second consecutive year for the Best of Chamber Award by the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, JCC. • The institution was also nominated for and subsequently won the JCC entrepreneurial award twice. • Two MOU’s successfully established with Canadian institutions under Canada/CARICOM scholarship agreement. First batch of students enrolled in Canada/Jamaica exchange program and are currently studying in Canada. • Partnership MOU signed between UCC and the Barbadian organization CICMC (Caribbean Institute for Certified Management Consultants) and included a successful launch of the Jamaica Chapter of the CICMC. • Partnership MOU successfully developed with ECCMD (Eastern Caribbean Center for Management and Development). • Two articulation agreements successfully developed and signed with colleges in the OECS islands. • Offered new distance education options to students in Jamaica and in the OECS islands. • A total of ~ One Million Dollars ($1,000,000) offered in scholarships to students from the Miracle Club of the Agency for Inner City Renewal • UCC offered additional scholarships to students from the general public. The total amount offered was $4,337,500.00 to approximately 40 students. Information Systems & Technology: • Student Management System (SMS) ▫ Successful launch of the SMS which allowed for electronic registration of students, activation of their student accounts and selection for their classes for the Academic year. Improved financial information regarding student population through the use of the Student Management System (SMS). Student Management System (SMS) designed to significantly improve internal business processes and improve efficiency. • Upgrade of Wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet infrastructure at all UCC Regional locations  Upgraded locations with commercial grade equipment to increase access range and internet access speed for students • UCC/Digicel Communications and Telephony Infrastructure Partnership: ▫ Upgrade to a modernized telephone system throughout the institution using Cloud Technology. ▫ Implementation of Video-Conferencing technology ▫ Cloud computing infrastructure with the use of Thin Clients to help drive down energy cost. ▫ Implementation IP Surveillance Human Resource Development: • Invested in employee advancement by enrolling staff in various training sessions/programs geared at different areas. • Successfully formulated new staff incentive schemes • Continued to offer scholarships to staff members and employ student workers (to help underwrite their cost of study) Corporate Social Responsibility: • Jointly hosted with the Agency for Inner-City Renewal, Inaugural Conference on Social Entrepreneurship. Theme: You Can Do Good by Doing Well – The Role of Social Entrepreneurship in Community Transformation • UCC encouraged community service of staff with the Good Samaritan Inn weekly feeding program.
